INTELSPACE Innovation Technologies S.A. and URENIO Research of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki have established a research group to collaborate on smart and intelligent cities, innovation systems and innovation strategies. INTELSPACE was founded in 2005 by researchers from URENIO Research as a spin-off company focused on novel technologies for intelligent spaces.

INTELSPACE offers engineering, IT, and consulting services for the design and development of intelligent environments that generate systemic and transformative innovations.

We provide services for developing DIP (digital-institutional-physical) innovation ecosystems, in which digital platforms, datasets, and AI applications converge with physical infrastructure and institutions to enable innovations. We advise public authorities on DIP innovation strategies that strengthen capabilities and collaboration among research organisations, companies, institutions, and users, along the entire innovation supply chain.

We offer integrated services for the design and implementation of intelligent environments, intelligent cities, districts, and platform-based ecosystems of industry, services, housing, and other sectors. Our approach draws on knowledge-based functions, connected intelligence architectures, digital platforms, and data spaces that improve urban growth, safety, sustainability, resilience, and quality of life.

At the intersection of intelligent environments and sustainability, we facilitate initiatives focused on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions. Through these initiatives, we help industries and cities to navigate smart-green transitions by advancing resource efficiency, decarbonisation, social inclusion, and transparent governance.

INTELSPACE has developed software applications and web platforms that sustain key innovation processes, such as scanning for the best available technology, improve learning and technology absorption, collaborative design and development of products, user involvement in the innovation process, the design and development of online marketplaces. In cooperation with URENIO, the company has created a portfolio of solutions for intelligent cities, mainly in the fields of innovation economy and governance, which are open source applications and freely available from the Github.

DIP Innovation ecosystems

Intelspace focuses on developing innovation environments, living labs, digital platforms, user-driven innovation ecosystems, and hybrid innovation ecosystems. It provides advisory services for the design of innovation strategies, especially for initiatives by European regions to implement smart specialisation research and innovation strategies.

Intelligent cities

Intelspace has participated in various research projects related to the design and development of intelligent city strategies, platforms, and applications. Our primary concern is the architecture of city intelligence and how digital components (broadband networks, sensors, data, software) connect to physical spaces, and institutional components to improve the economy, living, and governance of cities.

URENIO Research

URENIO is a university laboratory for the promotion of research and supply of technological services in the fields of cluster development, innovation systems and strategies, and intelligent cities. URENIO is part of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Development in the Faculty of Technology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

URENIO has been involved in numerous research projects funded by the European R&D Framework Programmes (FP and Horizon), the Competitiveness and Innovation Programmes (CIP), the EU territorial cooperation programmes (INTERREG, MED, SEE, etc.), the Innovative Actions of the European Regional Development Fund, the OECD, and the United Nations. Research carried out in the The Lab is recognised by leading organisations worldwide. It is among the early proponents of research in the field of intelligent cities, having introduced the concept of intelligent cities as cyber-physical systems of innovation and most advanced innovative agglomerations. URENIO is certified with ISO 9001 for the Design and Development of Software.
