INTELSPACE Innovation Technologies S.A. and URENIO Research of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki form a research group that works together on projects dealing with innovation systems, innovation policy and strategy, and intelligent / smart cities. INTELSPACE was founded in 2005 as spin-off company of URENIO Research with a focus on the design and development of intelligent / smart cities, intelligent districts, cyber-physical systems, and other types of intelligent spaces.
INTELSPACE offers engineering, IT, and consulting services in the field of intelligent / smart cities. The company specializes in the design and development of physical spaces and digital environments sustaining innovation in cities addressing problems of growth and employment, violence, vandalism and aggression, safety and security, air pollution, climate change, optimisation of infrastructures, and participatory governance.
The expertise of the company is in two interrelated areas (1) innovation systems and strategies, in particular cyber-physical systems of innovation in which software applications and datasets drive disruptive innovation, social innovation, awareness and specialised services, and platforms that support the entire cycle of innovation strategy from context analysis to performance measurement, and (2) intelligent / smart cities, and the underlying formation and evolution of smart ecosystems, ontologies, knowledge functions and architectures of connected intelligence, smart city strategy and governance, design and development of applications for growth, safety, and sustainability.
INTELSPACE has developed software applications and web platforms that sustain key innovation processes, such as scan for the best available technology, improve learning and technology absorption, collaborative design and development of products, user involvement in innovation process, design and development of online marketplaces. In cooperation with URENIO, the company has created a portfolio of solutions for intelligent cities, mainly in the fields of the innovation economy and transparent governance, which are open source applications and freely available from the Github.
Intelspace focuses on the development of smart innovation environments, living labs, Internet platforms, and user-driven innovation ecosystems. Moreover, it provides advisory services for innovation strategy development, especially with regards to initiatives of European regions to develop innovation strategies for smart specialisation.
Intelspace has participated in various research projects related to the design and development of intelligent (smart) city strategies and applications. Our primary concern is the architecture of city intelligence, and the way digital components (broadband networks, sensors, data, software) connect to physical and institutional components to improve the economy, living, and governance of cities.
URENIO is a university laboratory for the promotion of research and supply of technological services in the fields of cluster development, innovation systems and strategies, and intelligent cities. URENIO is part of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Development in the Faculty of Technology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
URENIO has been involved in numerous research projects funded by the European R&D Framework Programmes (FP and H2020), the Competitiveness and Innovation Programmes (CIP), the EU territorial cooperation programmes (INTERREG, MED, SEE, etc.), the Innovative Actions of the European Regional Development Fund, the OECD, and the United Nations. Research carried out in the Lab is acknowledged by leading organisations worldwide. It is among the early proponents of research in the field of intelligent cities, having introduced the concept of intelligent cities as cyber-physical systems of innovation and most advanced innovative agglomerations. URENIO is certified with ISO 9001: 2008 for the Design and Development of Software.
INTELSPACE is working with an international network of scientists, innovation consultants and IT experts from academic institutions of the European Union and the US, and conducts research dealing with the creation of physical, institutional, and digital environments for innovation-led urban development.
